Speak (1999) tell us that wushu and daoyin physical activities were not practiced for reasons of vanity. Muscle development and beauty were not regarded highly by the Daoists or the Confucianists. They go on to tell us that physical activities associated with the maintenance of health and fitness in China emphasised more of a harmony of movement, consciousness and breathing to stimulate vital energy (Chi). Muscular development was not the primary purpose. The simple agricultural life of the sedentary populations allowed experiences of natural life to be absorbed into recreational activity. This is the history of Chinese movements like the tai chi forms. In my experience people don't come to classes to buld muscles and look good. What are your reasons for going to tai-chi clases?

To find peace with myself. It is a finding shared by many of our taiji class as we often discuss this question most common when a new student joins us. Another reason I am found is to try something new out

You discover more and more as you practice. To start with Dr tai chi,I wanted to do exercise without the strain on my joints from traditional sports.
